It’s not all about you

“It’s not all about you.” a life lesson that emphasizes the importance of humility and recognizing that the world does not revolve around oneself. In Freemasonry, we are taught the importance of self-improvement through service to others and the community. We believe individuals should strive to be better members of society and promote the common good, rather than focusing solely on their own desires and needs. Cultivate a sense of humility and service that aligns with your core values.

When a tough decision must be made and it feels personal, I remind myself it’s not all about me, and that I’m one piece of a bigger universe that’s at play right now. Remember that your decisions and actions have consequences beyond yourself. It’s easy to get caught up in our own wants, needs, and desires, but when we shift our focus to the bigger picture, we can make better choices that benefit everyone involved.

The Bible offers guidance on this topic. In Philippians 2:3-4, it says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” This encourages us to put aside our own desires and instead focus on the needs of others.

When we adopt the mindset that it’s not all about us, we can approach difficult decisions with more clarity and objectivity. With this life lesson we can step back and consider the perspectives and needs of others involved, rather than just our own. This can lead to more effective problem-solving and better outcomes for everyone. Our actions and decisions have a ripple effect beyond just those immediately involved. A personal decision can affect not only our own lives but also the lives of those around us, such as family members or friends.
